THE END IS HEAR - Final KTUH Playlist Aug.28th, 2012

As I write, the time is now 1:40am, and I've just finalized my playlist for today's final installment of Timbre Tantrums on KTUH.

I tend to get excited before every show, as it takes me an average of nine hours to prepare each 3 hour episode. That includes three hours spent searching for new music (via blogs, artists/label sites, music services, etc.) then another six hours of sorting and selecting songs, new and old. Today is intensified by the feeling that it's a culmination of the excitement from the past three years.

All KTUH DJs prepare (or don't prepare) in their own way, but I've always felt that my meticulous attention to detail has set Timbre Tantrums apart from other radio programming.

From the start of this blog, I've had very specific goals:

1. Promote the bands/musicians whom I love.
2. Cover a variety of genres and obscure the boundaries that segregate their fans.
3. Provide an avenue for music fans to become open to something new.
4. Get a kitten.

Hence the name, "Timbre Tantrums." Returning to KTUH and getting a weekly show became a huge extension of those ideals. It allowed me to reach an audience through the songs themselves, rather than just words and photos. With that, I expanded my criteria to ensure that:

5. I featured songs from various parts of the world, sung in different languages.
6. Created a balanced mix of male/female artists, vocal/instrumental songs, and the new/not as new/old.

The whole process harked back to my yesteryears, when I used to make mixed tapes for myself and for friends. There's an art to choosing the right (not necessarily the best) songs, making them flow together, and having it all fit within the time limit of the cassette (3 hours in this scenario). There's a great book called Mix Tape, edited by Thurston Moore, which dives into "the art of cassette culture."

During my time at KTUH, I've received calls, emails, and had many positive interactions with listeners. I've made new friends with listeners, bands, and the KTUH family; all of whom have given me praise, constructive criticism, recommendations, and support; making my show all that it is today. For every good thing that Timbre Tantrums has become, it is in large part to these people, which in all likelihood includes you, reading this right now.

And so, I go into today's show with confidence and a feeling of accomplishment, albeit without a kitten.
